Read a turf spec sheet in four minutes.
Face weight, pile, yarn, backing, drainage, infill, stimp. These nine lines separate a putting surface from a green carpet. Print it and take it to any warehouse quote.
| Spec | Timberline Putt | Landscape / pet turf | Box-store putting roll | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Yarn | Texturized polypropylene, 6600 dtex | Polyethylene | Polypropylene | Nylon holds texture under infill. That is the roll. |
| Pile height | 0.75 in | 1"–1.5" | 1/4"–3/8" | Over 5/8" the ball wobbles. Lawn heights do not putt. |
| Face weight | 55.49 oz/yd² | 60–90 oz | 12–20 oz | Putting wants dense and short, not tall and heavy. |
| Backing | PP fabric + approx. 15 oz/yd² polyurethane | Urethane | Thin latex | Drainage rate decides whether it puddles in February. |
| Infill | 1.5 lb/sf silica, metered | 1–2 lb/sf, cosmetic | None specified | Infill is your speed dial. Add to slow, brush to quicken. |
| Stimp band | 9–12 on a true pad | n/a — not a putting face | 6–8 and dropping | Anyone quoting a fixed stimp without a pad spec is guessing. |
| UV stability | Manufacturer specification on request | Stabilized | Fades and lays down | Sun kills cheap PP first. You will see it in year two. |
| Pet suitability | No — use Landscape Line | Yes | No | Putting turf is the wrong pet lawn. Different product. |
| Warranty reality | Material warranty, spec on request | Material only if self-installed | Effectively none | Installed warranties do not follow DIY. Nobody’s does. |
Specifications shown reflect current supplier documentation. Unverified details are available on request rather than estimated.
Flatness
Under 1/8" deviation across a 6 ft straightedge. Compaction, not turf, gets you there.
Texture
The texturized polypropylene putting face is purpose-built for ball roll; pad preparation and finishing remain critical to performance.
Infill mass
Silica at 1.5 lb/sf, brushed in lifts. More infill slows the green. Less quickens it and shows seams.

Why is $2/sf turf a trap?
At that price it is thin polypropylene with no UV package. It lies flat in a photo and dies in a season of direct sun.
Does face weight alone tell me quality?
No. A heavy lawn yarn is useless for putting. Yarn type, pile height, and backing drainage matter more.
Can one turf do pets and putting?
No. Anyone selling one face for both is selling convenience, not performance.
What drainage rate should I look for?
Ask for inches per hour through the backing, then match it to your base aggregate. The slower of the two governs.
